Overall, the team played much better, and it was predicted that they would finally exorcise their first-round playoff demons.

With a staggering 312 goals scored last season, only 25 behind the league-leading Florida Panthers, Toronto was once again one of the finest teams in the league. However, they lost in the playoffs once more. The Tampa Bay Lightning, the defending champions, presented the Toronto Maple Leafs with a challenging opponent in the first round of the playoffs despite the Leafs’ improved performance compared to previous seasons.

It was disappointing once more for the Toronto front office, players, and fans, but there had been general progress. This summer, general manager Kyle Dubas brought in a number of new players to don the renowned blue and white outfit. Goaltending was the first item on the list, and Petr Mrazek was the first player sent to the Chicago Blackhawks by the Toronto Maple Leafs. This made it possible for the Ottawa Senators to acquire Matt Murray a few days later.
