The Buffalo Sabres were defeated 3-2 by the New York Islanders on Tuesday. But they followed it up two days later with a dreadful 10-4 loss at home to the Dallas Stars on Thursday night. The Sabres were on the cusp of the wild-card race at the start of the week. They had 68 points, a couple of games in hand, and a chance to topple the Islanders. Since then, they’ve lost three straight games, ending in their worst loss of the season.

Before the game, Sabres coach Don Granato expressed his team’s unhappiness following the Islanders game. In terms of race ramifications, the game versus another wild-card contender seemed like a playoff. It hurt to see the Sabres blow it like that. Granato hoped that the lessons learned from that setback would inspire improved performances down the stretch. Instead, everything added up to an even larger letdown on Thursday night.

“We might put too much pressure on ourselves,” Rasmus Dahlin said. “We really want this. You really, really want to give it a push. So, I don’t know what it is, maybe we think too much and whatnot. I just know that tomorrow is a big day and we got to go back to work.”

Jamie Benn had a goal and two assists

Jamie Benn had a goal and two assists, Radek Faksa scored twice, and the Dallas Stars produced their biggest offensive output in 14 years in a 10-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night.

In a game in which the Stars had 16 players earn at least one point, Joe Pavelski, Joel Kiviranta, youngster Wyatt Johnston, Evgenii Dadonov, and Mason Marchment also scored. Dallas advanced to 5-1-1 in its last seven games and 4-0-1 on the road, thanks to Jake Oettinger’s 25 saves.

The ten goals matched for the second-most in a game in team history, and the most since a 10-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Feb. 2, 2009. The ten goals also tie a team record for most in an away game, which was achieved two years ago when the Stars were situated in Minnesota.
