On Sunday, December 11, the Denver Broncos (3-9) will host the Kansas City Chiefs (9-3) in Week 14 of the 2022 NFL season. This is a brief preview of the AFC West matchup.
QB Patrick Mahomes, who is 9-0 versus the Broncos in his career with 14 touchdown passes and four interceptions in those games, is the focal point of every Kansas City game plan. But owing to the rise of rookie running back Isiah Pacheco and the arrival of ex-Denver running back Melvin Gordon, who will be anxious to make a statement against his old team, Mahomes won’t have to do it all through the air. In order to stop Russell Wilson of the Broncos from escaping the pocket, Kansas City’s defensive linemen will focus on positioning themselves to intercept Wilson’s throws.
The coaching staff in Denver appears to have finally realized that Wilson performs best outside the pocket. Wilson’s continued inability to see the middle of the field from the pocket hasn’t improved the offense much despite a late-season transition to a new play caller in Klint Kubiak. With bootlegs and rollouts, Kubiak should get Wilson moving to give him a better field of vision when facing the Chiefs. The Broncos’ top defensive concern will be containing Mahomes and KC’s potent passing attack.
