The Orlando Magic will welcome the Indiana Pacers to Amway Center for an NBA game on Wednesday. The Magic won 113-98 in their last game over the Celtics. Paolo Banchero scored 23 points, Jonathan Isaac played in an NBA game for the first time in 2 1/2 years and the Orlando Magic broke the Boston Celtics’ nine-game winning streak Monday night with a 113-98 victory.
Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown scored 26 points apiece for the Celtics, who managed just three points after Tatum’s 3-pointer cut Orlando’s lead to 97-95 with 6:20 remaining. Wendell Carter Jr. had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Magic, who beat the Celtics for the third straight time after losing 10 straight to Boston.
“We guarded in that second half,” said Cole Anthony, who came off the Magic bench with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. “Under 100 points for a a team that’s got two guys (Tatum and Brown) averaging 60 points? That’s a heck of a job by our team.”
The Pacers on the other hand won 116-110 against the Bulls in their last game. Bennedict Mathurin looked at the Indiana Pacers’ 21-point first-half deficit and saw an opportunity. He kept urging his teammates to play hard, to follow the game plan and insisted they eventually could come back. Again. Then the 20-year-old rookie made sure of it.
Mathurin and Myles Turner each scored 26 points and Mathurin broke free for the decisive basket with 29.1 seconds left to give the Pacers a 116-110 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night. “He was the most animated I’ve seen him in the huddles all season,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “He was being encouraging, saying ‘We can do this, we can do this.’ And he just brings an indomitable will to compete, to get the ball in the basket and to outwork you.”
T.J. McConnell had 20 points and 10 assists for the Pacers. But without Turner’s big third quarter and Mathurin playing the role of closer, Indiana wouldn’t have completed the rally. “A lot of rookies are hitting a wall and losing steam at this point,” Carlisle said. “He’s actually gaining momentum and that’s the most impressive thing about him.”
