Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors will welcome the Detroit Pistons to Scotiabank Arena for an NBA game on Friday. The Toronto Raptors lost 114-118 in their last game over the Pacers. Raptors celebrated Canada Basketball Night. It was the first time since the NBA began tracking starters in 1970-71 that three Canadians started for the same team. “For it to happen in Toronto, it’s pretty cool,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “All three of those guys played well. Nembhard had a great game. Mathurin was terrific. I thought Brissett did what he does. He gave us energy, rebounded, he scored the first five points of the game. That was great.”

Pascal Siakam scored 18 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter but the Raptors lost their second straight. Siakam also had 10 rebounds and seven assists. Fred VanVleet had 28 points and 11 assists for Toronto, and Jakob Poeltl scored 23. Poeltl missed two free throws with 1:24 left when Toronto could have cut the deficit to two. After a missed 3 by VanVleet, Nembhard connected from long range to give the Pacers a 114-107 lead with 33 seconds to play.

“That was the shot that put the game away,” Carlisle said. “Just an amazing night for him and his family.” Nembhard shot 11 for 17, going 3 of 5 from long range. “I didn’t really feel too much pressure to play out of character tonight,” he said. “I just wanted to be aggressive.” “It was really fun just to play in Toronto my first time,” Mathurin said. “The fact that we got the win makes it even more exciting.”

Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons on the other hand lost 129-107 against the Hawks in their last game. Marvin Bagley III scored a season-high 31 points in Detroit’s fourth straight loss. The Pistons (16-57) have lost 15 of 16 and have the NBA’s worst record. Detroit was outscored 23-12 in second-chance points. “We let them get a lot of offensive boards and second-chance points,” Bagley said. “It really came down to that.”

Saddiq Bey had 14 points and 11 rebounds as he faced his former Detroit teammates for the first time since being traded from the Pistons to the Hawks on Feb. 9 for five second-round picks. Bey was averaging 14.8 points and 28.8 minutes with Detroit and has averaged 10.1 points and 25.5 minutes with Atlanta. Bagley said facing Bey “was a little weird coming in at first.” “I’m happy for him,” Bagley said. “Happy he’s doing good and happy he’s in a situation to do great.”

Detroit coach Dwane Casey said before the game, “It was a tough decision for our organization” to trade Bey. “He’s a beautiful person, beautiful man and did all the right things.” Pistons rookie Jaden Ivey’s last-second uncontested layup didn’t set well with Atlanta’s John Collins. The two exchanged words after the game. “I don’t worry about that,” Bagley said, adding “We’re not going to stop playing until the end of the game.”
