After the Miami Heat defeated the New York Knicks in Game 1, NBA legend Dwyane Wade and his wife Gabrielle Union faced jeers as they departed Madison Square Garden on Sunday evening. Boos and sneers were directed at Wade and Union because of the former basketball player’s daughter, 15-year-old Zaya, who came out as transgender and was the focus of a legal dispute in Los Angeles.

‘Why did you mutilate your son’

The former Heat guard explained why he and his family left Florida a couple years ago, there was heckling. As he and Zaya triumphed in a legal battle in Los Angeles to change her name and gender from boy to girl, his interview with Rachel Nichols was made public. He claimed that he and his family had moved out of Florida because they did not “feel comfortable there.” “Why did you mutilate your son?” one person can be heard on video. Wade did not answer any of the jeers.

‘This Petition is about empowering Zaya to live her truth’

“That’s another reason why I don’t live in that state,” Wade told Nicholas, via People. “A lot of people don’t know that. I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions,” he told Nichols, via People. “I mean, obviously, the tax [situation] is great. Having Wade County is great. But my family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there. And so that’s one of the reasons why I don’t live there.”

Zaya had been denied a new birth certificate by Wade’s ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, but the NBA superstar claimed the move was in his daughter’s “best interest.”  “This Petition is about empowering Zaya to live her truth,” Concerning Zaya, who has been recognised as a female during the time she was 12 years old, a court document from November stated.
