The Denver Nuggets will welcome the Los Angeles Clippers to Ball Arena for an NBA game on Sunday. The Nuggets won 109-115 in their last game over the Cavaliers. Nikola Jokic began his final push for a possible third straight MVP by getting yet another triple-double. This season, that means another Denver win.Jokic had 24 points, 18 rebounds and 13 assists for his NBA-leading 22nd triple-double and Michael Porter Jr. scored 25, leading the Nuggets to a 115-109 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night.
Jokic’s 13th triple-double in 16 games helped the Western Conference-leading Nuggets come out of the All-Star break with an impressive road win over the Cavs, who dropped to 25-7 at home. The Nuggets improved to 22-0 when Jokic got a triple-double. “He’s the MVP,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said about his star center. “When the MVP goes out and puts up a triple-double, it means a lot. He is a historically great player.”
There was no argument from the Cavs. “I thought we had him contained until I looked up (at the scoreboard),” Cavs star Donovan Mitchell said. “The bigs did a good but then in the second half he was the aggressor in different ways. “Look at what he and (Sixers star Joel) Embiid are doing on a nightly basis. It’s next level. It’s impressive and I think it’s going to come down to those two. Hell of a player.”
The Los Angeles Clippers on the other hand lost 175-176 against the Kings in their last game. The Clippers had a 175-169 advantage with 1:57 remaining before the Kings scored the final seven points, including Fox’s jumper with 36.5 seconds remaining. The Clippers had the final shot, but Nico Batum missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
“We just stuck with it. We got down 12 at one point but just had our heads up. And we knew they were going to let us back in,” Monk said. Fox — who also had 12 assists and five steals — is just the 12th player since 1973-74 with 40 points, 10 assists and five steals in a game. The last to do it was James Harden in 2019. “We just had to grind this game out. And we were on the second night of a back-to-back but it is what it is. We have a younger team than them,” Fox said.
Kawhi Leonard scored a season-high 44 points for Los Angeles and Paul George added 34. Leonard had 21 points in the third quarter, which tied his career high for points scored in a quarter. “I thought he did a great job getting to a spot with the 3-point shots and attacking the basket,” Lue said about Leonard.
