Jaxson Hayes, a centre for the New Orleans Pelicans, was charged with a dozen misdemeanour counts on Monday, including domestic violence, resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer, stemming from an incident at his Woodland Hills home in July. During the arrest, police used a Taser to subdue Hayes, 21. Hayes was charged with multiple counts of domestic violence, as well as vandalism, trespassing, resisting arrest, and battery on a police officer, by the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.

Los Angeles police released body cam footage of the confrontation a month after Hayes’ arrest. According to the video, Hayes’ girlfriend’s cousin called 911 and told the dispatcher that the woman had sent text messages claiming Hayes was becoming loud and violent and that she was scared and couldn’t call the cops herself. Around 3 a.m. on July 28, police were called to the 22000 block of Mariano Street, where body cam video shows Hayes, 21, and another man standing in front of the house.

‘Little argument’

Hayes reportedly told officers he and his girlfriend “were just having a little argument. She was throwing some stuff at me.”

Officers are repeatedly seen telling Hayes to stay outside while they speak with the woman inside. They told him they didn’t need a warrant to enter his house when he demanded to know if they had one. Hayes was medically cleared for booking at the Van Nuys Jail after receiving treatment at a hospital for injuries sustained during the altercation, according to police. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, he was released on a USD 25,000 bond.

Early in the altercation, a body cam video from a sergeant on the scene shows Hayes shoving an officer into a wall while that officer tries to handcuff him. The officer reportedly sustained an elbow injury and was taken to the hospital for treatment. According to the City Attorney’s Office, the arraignment has been postponed until February 15.
