The Oklahoma City Thunder released an official statement stating that Chet Holmgren would miss out on the 2022-23 NBA season. The second overall pick played in the Summer League and caught the attention of many with his abilities on both ends of the floor. His injury will undoubtedly be a big disappointment for the OKC Thunder as they had high hopes on him.

Chet Holmgren is believed to have injured his foot during his appearance in last week’s star-studded Pro-AM event in Seattle. The former Gonzaga player was guarding an attack on transition from LeBron James when he seemed to have suffered the injury. The OKC Thunder sent an official statement to make the news about his absence public. It read:

“Certainly, we are disappointed for Chet, especially given the excitement he had about getting on the floor with his teammates this season. We know Chet has a long career ahead of him within our organization and the Oklahoma City community. One of the things that most impressed us during the process of selecting Chet was his determination and focus. We expect that same tenacity will carry him through this period of time as we work together and support him during his rehabilitation.”

How big is Chet Holmgren’s absence to the OKC Thunder?

Chet Holmgren is one of the most unique talents to come out of the 2022 NBA draft. Listed at 7 feet, the young prodigy can shoot lights out from the three-point range. Although he is not the most physically intimidating player, Holmgren was one of the best shot blockers in college. He showed glimpses of that during his appearances in the Summer League.

The big had also formed a great relationship with point guard Josh Giddey. If Chet Holmgren was available, it would be interesting to see how the two would play together. Giddey is an elite passer and with the ability Holmgren has, the two could have created a lot of problems for opposing teams.

A foot injury this early in his career is certainly a concerning thing for Chet Holmgren. He has a lot of talent, but if injuries keep coming up, it could affect his ceiling as a player. The OKC Thunder were counting on him to help the team become a competitive side. However, they will now be looking to help him recover quickly and get back to being at his best when he takes the court next season.
