Boston Celtics big man Al Horford signed a new two-year $20 million deal that will see him at the franchise till the end of the 2024-25 season. The 36-year-old has been a key part of the reigning Eastern Conference champions. His contributions on the offensive and defensive end have made the team a leading contender.
In the 18 games played so far, Al Horford has averaged 10.9 PPG on 55% shooting from the field and 48.8% shooting from the three-point range. He has been a great presence in the paint and has held their defense together in the absence of Robert Williams III. Signing his contract assures the Boston Celtics a key piece to their pursuit of winning a championship.
Al Horford is currently in the final year of his four-year $109 million contract, which he signed in 2019. His extension now means that the team will have all their key pieces except for Grant Williams for a foreseeable amount of time. However, sources say that the team are well positioned to extend Williams’ contract at the end of the season.
With Al Horford and Robert Williams III taking charge of the defense, the Celtics have been able to see massive success. Last season they finished as the best defensive team and this time around even without the “Timelord” the Celtics have been unstoppable. Al Horford’s veteran presence has certainly been of great help. In a roster full of talented youngsters, the 36 year old has made his presence felt and become an invaluable member of a team that could once again make it out of the East.
Al Horford has been in the league for 15 years. However, it was not until last year that he made his debut in the NBA Finals. He helped the Celtics take a 1-0 lead with a stellar 26 point display, but that obviously wasn’t enough for the seventeen time champions to take down the Golden State Warriors. A lot were surprised with Horford’s performances as he had not had great spells with the Philadelphia 76ers and the OKC Thunder. However, he revived his career and is now on a team that has the best record in the NBA.
Al Horford has played against the best players in the league. He has been in great locker rooms and knows what its like to play on the biggest stage. This is one of the biggest reasons the Boston Celtics did not hesitate before giving him the extension. He has been of great help to the youngsters and his great IQ has helped the other players in a big way.
Although Al Horford may not have the same impact on the game he once he used to, there is no doubt that he is one of the key pieces for the Celtics. His abilites to lockdown some of the bigs has given great security to their defense. If he is able to continue playing at a top level, there is no doubt that the Celtics are going to be the team to beat.
