Star point guard and Los Angeles Lakers star, Russell Westbrook had the worst season of his illustrious career this season. He was so bad that he could not do anything right and things got so bad for him at one point that Frank Vogel, the former coach of the Lakers benched him. Over the course of the regular season, Westbrook averaged 18.5 points per game with 7.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists in 78 games. Now that might be a decent turnover for an average player but not Russell.

Despite his struggles, Stephen A. Smith, who is a lifelong New York Knicks fan said that he would take Russ in an instant and also went as far as saying that he would up all the players on the Knicks roster to make that move happen. Speaking on NBA Countdown, he said, “My priority is not about him cutting without the basketball and finishing because he is always able to finish at the basket. Obviously moving without the basketball is paramount and I get all of that, but I know he can make a layup. I know the athleticism is there.

Smith continued, “What I haven’t seen is a jump shot. But I am going to tell Russell Westbrook right now on national television. I am going to show my support for Russell Westbrook. I am going to validate it right in front of y’all. I’d give up everybody for him with the Knicks. Everybody, ok? Because that brother right there, LA might not be ideal for him but somewhere else where that energy, that fervour, that tenacity, that athleticism. I’d take Russell Westbrook today.”

Russell Westbrook should reinvent himself

Westbrook has always been a star player on a team that does not have any superstars. He was the star of his team and the league after Kevin Durant left the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Golden State Warriors. After KD’s departure, Russ averaged a triple-double every season. But he doesn’t play well when he is in a team with superstars. He failed at Houston Rockets alongside James Harden and he is now struggling alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Former NBA player and ESPN analyst Jalen Brown was on the same panel as Stephen A. Smith and said that Westbrook can still be a great player and can contribute in a big way if he learns how to play with fellow superstar players and if he can reinvent himself. Rose said, “See, you are making my point. He has to reinvent himself to play on a winning team. See, you want him to go to a team to be the best player and probably be in the play-in. I think he can reinvent himself playing alongside LeBron James and AD.”
