Smith Jr. was released in February with a right elbow injury after his final play for the Portland Trail Blazers in the 21-22 season. The injury wasn’t career-ending, but the Blazers chose not to keep Smith Jr. as he entered a rebuilding season with younger players. The news comes as a shock as most fans expect Isiah Thomas or Kemba Walker to be the eventual backup point guard signings. Holding no spot in the regular rotation, he averaged 15 points 4Reb 5asts in 30 minutes of play as a starter. Since then, Smith has struggled to land backup roles, coming off the benches in Dallas, New York, Detroit, and Portland, but he was often out of the rotation. At just 24 years old, Smith is an accomplished athlete and a proven high-stakes defender. However, his poor shot selection, botched jumping his shot, and inability to execute an effective offense have relegated him to the fringe of his NBA. I wouldn’t be shocked if Smith Jr.’s contract wasn’t guaranteed and his other ball-handling options in training his camp backed him up for a spot as a ball-handler. Smith Jr.’s lack of shooting could limit his role in the rotation. In the modern NBA, having two non-shooters on the floor is a challenge, and it’s safe to say that all of Charlotte’s center options other than PJ Washington suffer from their own shooting limits.
