Golden State Warriors star Andrew Wiggins was by far the best player in the NBA Finals after Stephen Curry. His defence coupled with his shot-making skills proved invaluable as the Warriors won their fourth NBA title in eight years. While others on the team struggled to stay consistent and overcome Boston’s elite defence, Wiggins stepped up and dropped a lot of points throughout the series. He had an excellent Game 5 where he dropped 26 points and had 13 rebounds which had the fans purring over how much he has improved from his days with the Timberwolves.

Former NBA player JJ Redick was asked what should be Golden State’s priorities this offseason and he said that renewing Wiggins’ contract should be number one on the list. Speaking on NBA Today, Redick said, “For me, you’ve got to re-sign Andrew Wiggins to an extension. He is a guy who is 27 years old. He was the second most important player for you in a championship run. Let’s value him. Let’s sign him to a reasonable extension. It’s gonna be a bag regardless but let’s sign him to an extension and lock him up long-term. Jordan Poole unless urgent about singing him just because he is still on his rookie contract, you are still going to control his rights the following season. That doesn’t seem like as urgent of a need as resigning Kevon Looney and signing Wiggins to his extension.”

Andrew Wiggins had a great season

Andrew Wiggins definitely had a great season and topped it all off with the NBA Championship. Over the course of the last season, Wiggins averaged 17.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game which is not a bad return for someone who not so long ago was labelled as ineffective with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

As for the Warriors, they sure have a lot of problems that they would be happy to entertain. After going through an underwhelming two seasons, they finally maximised the potential of their young squad and won the chip and because of that, they have a lot of great players. They will have to decide which players they value more as the new season approaches. For now, it would be wise for them to renew the contract of Andrew Wiggins and help him to commit his future to the organization which in many people’s eyes would be seen as a masterstroke given how well he has played over the course of the last season.
