In an MLB matchup at the Oakland Coliseum on Sunday, the New York Mets and Oakland Athletics square off. The first two games of this series were divided between the two teams. The Mets had an overall record of 96-57 going into this game, but their pitching severely struggled on Saturday. The pitchers gave up 10 runs to the A’s, which was the deciding factor in a six-run loss. The Mets’ pitching has been strong this season overall, allowing only 3.71 runs per game, which ranks fourth best in MLB.

The Mets will need Scherzer to get out to a strong start in this game. The A’s, who are on the losing end of this battle, have had a dismal season and now own a record of 56-96 overall. Although this offence hasn’t been terrific this year, on Saturday they scored the 10 runs needed to win. Oakland is is averaging 3.48 runs per game, good for 29th place in the league.

Max Scherzer, a pitcher for the Mets with a 10-4 record and a 2.15 ERA, will start the game. He pitched six innings against the Milwaukee Brewers in his most recent start, allowing no hits or runs. JP Sears, an A’s pitcher with a 6-2 record and a 3.58 ERA, will start the game. He pitched five innings in his most recent start against Seattle, surrendering just one hit and one run.
