Milwaukee Brewers vs San Francisco Giants will take place at American Family Field in another round of MLB action. The Cardinals’ perseverance in putting up one arduous ninth-inning at-bat after another to build momentum, culminating in Tommy Edman’s two-run walk-off double for an unlikely 6-5 victory against the Nationals at Busch Stadium, was the night’s big story on Wednesday. The broader issue, though, is what this heartfelt victory may mean for St. Louis when the playoffs begin next month. Shortly after Tyler O’Neill and youngster, Ben DeLuzio were able to advance and score thanks to Edman’s double that evaded left fielder Alex Call’s glove, ace third baseman Nolan Arenado, one of the heroes of the wild five-run rally, acknowledged the Cardinals had changed their emphasis recently.
The Cards are now focusing on the Mets and Braves in an effort to clinch the desired No. 2 seed in the National League, rather than just trying to defeat the struggling Brewers in the National League Central. Getting that would give St. Louis a first-round bye and spare it from having to face a risky club in the Wild Card Series like Philadelphia, San Diego, or Milwaukee. The Cardinals pulled within five games of the Braves and five and a half games of the Mets after becoming the first MLB club this season to trail by four runs or more in the bottom of the ninth inning and come back to win.

When the Nationals reached starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery with two outs in the seventh inning to tie the game at one, most of Wednesday appeared to be a forgettable night for the Cardinals. St. Louis fell behind 5-1 in the eighth inning thanks to the bullpen’s subsequent four-run outburst. Brendan Donovan singled to lead off the ninth inning on a ball that took a difficult hop and bounced off third baseman César Hernández.
