Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly recently revealed that Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were among several other clubs from the French league that showed interest in signing him last summer. He also highlighted that he was offered to join the record Ligue 1 champions before they signed his idol and defending-ace Sergio Ramos from La Liga giants Real Madrid. He was touted as the replacement for their veteran defender Thiago Silva who moved to Chelsea. The Senegalese has been a part of the Napoli squad since 2014 and has played a crucial role to attract various clubs across Europe through his phenomenal defensive prowess. He, however, had chosen to stick with Napoli after the club showed faith in his ability and backed him.

“It’s true I had discussions with everyone. There were a lot of clubs interested. There was PSG, but there were also other clubs. Don’t really like to talk about it; it’s something I try to kick in a lot of times. There was interest; it makes me happy, it proves that my work pays, that people see the things that I do well. It pushes me to do even better,” he said in an interview to Canal+.

“PSG wanted me before taking Ramos. It makes me happy to be quoted next to these names. Ramos is an idol for everyone. There were offers, Naples decided to keep me. It also proves the love they have for me,” he added.

The Senegal captain has continued his fine run for Napoli in 2021-22 season. He has appeared in 14 games, with his side winning 11, recording a spectacular nine clean sheets.

Koulibaly has also contributed in the goals by netting twice and assisting once. He had won the Coppa Italia in 2019-20 and Supercoppa Italiana in 2014 with the Serie A giants besides being awarded the best defender of the year in 2018-19.

Not only that, he was a key part of his national team, which finished as runners-up in Africa Cup of Nations 2019 and will be looking to put his best foot forward in the upcoming edition as well. He was the Senegal player of the year in 2017 and 2018. His consistency has made him one of the most sought after defenders in the European transfer market who is at his prime.

It can also be said that he would have been a better option for PSG than Ramos as the latter is past his earlier form although he brings in a lot of experience.
