Paris Saint-Germain defender Sergio Ramos will miss the Champions League Round of 16 first leg against his former club Real Madrid, owing to a low-grade muscle injury. The centre-back has a calf injury and will have further tests in the coming days. He was forced to leave training early on Saturday with a physical issue, the club confirmed. The French record champions said in a statement that the 35-year-old will be rested after picking up a “low-grade muscle injury” in his right calf during Thursday’s training session.

“Sergio Ramos has to rest for a low-grade muscle injury in his right calf that occurred on Thursday during training and will be reassessed in the middle of the week,” PSG stated.

PSG head coach Mauricio Pochettino failed to make an extended comment on the injury when quizzed at the press conference.

“We know whether there is an injury. It depends on how the player evolves from day-to-day,” Pochettino told reporters on Sunday when asked for a time frame on Ramos’ return.

“We cannot know how long he will be out before he can get back to training and then playing.”

Ramos has put his weight behind Paris Saint-Germain to challenge all the titles in Europe. The legendary Spanish centre back further mentioned that the club has figured out a unique sporting project which will transpire every footballer to play for the French giants. The record-Ligue 1 champions are currently nine points clear at top in the French league.

“I think that PSG is the team to beat right now because of the sporting project they have going on here and all the players that have come here. Now we have to prove ourselves, you don’t win with the badge or the name alone, you have to earn it. We have good players and a good team but now we have to perform on the pitch. We have a good work ethic and we are going to go for all the titles we can win,” Ramos told PSG’s official channel.

“PSG is a big team, it doesn’t have a really long history but it has a unique sporting project and all the players want to come to PSG.”

Ramos was a part of the Real Madrid squad which won the Champion League four times. He is also mighty impressed with the new club’s determination to win titles and add to their prestigious trophy cabinet.
