The latest edition of El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona will take place at Bernabeu on Sunday. The Los Blancos central defender David Alaba, who is in his first season in Spain already knows what it feels like to play and score in a El Clasico. The Austrian did just that in October at Camp Nou. Meanwhile things might be a bit different this time around as Barcelona have revitalised themselves under head coach Xavi and are in stupendous form since last month. Therefore, unlike the previous encounter in the first half of the season, it’s going to be a much more even affair.

Alaba was speaking to RealMadrid TV in the build-up to Sunday’s clash and he said: “The team is in good shape. We’re on a good run of form, we’re playing well but we know we have to keep it up. I don’t think there is a single key to winning this game, there are many things we have to do if we’re going to come out on top”.

“Playing in a Clasico was amazing. It’s a wonderful experience and a day that will live long in my memory. As I said, it was a special experience. El Clásico is special because of the history behind it. There is a special feeling around the place in the week before the game, just like there was last time as well. I think that’s what makes it different to other matches”.

The Los Blancos are currently placed on top of the standings, 10 points clear of second-placed Sevilla and 15 points above third-placed Barcelona. Both sides are heading into the El Clasico on the back of some impressive form as Real Madrid thrashed Mallorca 3-0 in the La Liga fixture on Sunday while Barcelona defeated Galatasaray 2-1 on Thursday to enter the quarter-finals of Europa League.

Real have won all of their last five games in all competitions and their last defeat came against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last-16 first leg in February. Carlo Ancelotti’s side produced an incredible performance in the second leg at home to secure a 3-2 aggregate win and enter the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition. Karim Benzema led the thrilling comeback with a 17-minute hat-trick.
