Ousmane Dembele is in quite the situation when it comes to his FC Barcelona contract. The French winger is currently in the last six months of his deal and will become a free agent in the summer.

Therefore, he is free to talk to other clubs – and even sign a pre-contract with a foreign club. However, the reality of the situation is that Barcelona want him to stay.

New head coach Xavi Hernandez has made clear he is a big fan of the French winger. Indeed, Barcelona have made him an offer to stay at the club. But the offer has not been responded to by either Dembele or his agent.

And now the club directors are set to meet and discuss what more can be done in this situation.

There is a growing belief that Barcelona believe they will lose him on a free. Given he was signed for over GBP 100 million from Borussia Dortmund, it would represent quite the loss.

However, the club are keen to be prepared for any eventuality as the situation is now beyond their control.

There’s also been suggestions from some quarters that the club could banish him to the reserves if he doesn’t sign a new deal. This is something his agent Mousa Sissiko said he will ensure doesn’t happen.

“We don’t know what will happen, there’s nothing agreed or signed, but the directors are losing Ousmane themselves,” Sissoko said, as quoted by Sport.

“From the start we’ve been willing to talk, with conditions, sure, but without shutting the door. They can’t threaten Dembele that he will go six months without playing if he doesn’t renew now.

“It’s a type of pressure that doesn’t work with people like us. Maybe with other agents, but not me. I’m defending the player’s interests.”

Where can Ousmane Dembele go if he leaves Barcelona?

There are plenty of clubs interested in the French international. His injury record over the years hasn’t been great; it’s even reduced him to a running punchline on social media.

However, the winger is still only 24 years old and his talent is enormous. Therefore, a number of clubs are said to be keeping tabs on the situation.

He’s been linked with a move to Manchester United and Juventus. Other notable clubs, such as Bayern Munich and Chelsea, also reportedly have an outside chance of signing him.

Either way, there will be no shortage of suitors for Dembele should he be available on a free.
