Virat Kohli continues to make the headlines in the IPL 2022 but for an unwanted reason. The former India and RCB captain is going through a slump in form which has seen him register three golden ducks in the ongoing season of the lucrative tournament — the most — with his poor run becoming a major cause of concern in the cricketing folklore. It is, thus, that sports psychologist Mugdha Bavare who treated the Indian Olympians for Tokyo 2022 has suggested the RCB star to seek advice from a mental trainer in these testing times.

“Most cricketers and athletes go through ups and downs, so Virat is not alien to it. This is just a phase. Taking help from a mental trainer or a psychologist can help deal with the issue in a better way. Even taking a break can work at times. But for sure, this is the time when the player needs support,” Sports psychologist Mugdha Bavare, who treated Indian Olympians at Tokyo 2022, told mid-day.

‘Virat Kohli is lively character and great entertainer’

Kohli has looked lackluster in most part of the season and even though he has changed his batting position it has not quite worked in favour for one of the most feared hitters in the world. He started his IPL 2022 campaign while batting at his ideal position of No.3 but switched as an opener after a horrific run. But that hasn’t helped him much as he got out for a first-ball duck in the match against SRH at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. It was a soft-dismissal as Kohli tried to flick the delivery from J Suchith drifting into his pads and found the fielder at short midwicket.

1983 World Cup-winner Balvinder Singh Sandhu, who is also a Level-3 NCA coach, feels that the former India captain should isolate from daily work and give himself a break. “There is nothing wrong with his batting because he’s not getting out in a particular mode. It’s just that he is going through a rough patch, which is like quicksand—the more he tries to come out of it, the deeper he will get in. As a coach, I suggest he isolates from his daily routine and goes to a jungle where he can be with nature and wildlife. It will help him rejuvenate and come back mentally fresher

“He has a lovely family. His wife Anushka Sharma is a lively character and a great entertainer. They also have a lovely kid now. Virat should just cut off from the rest of the world and even social media for a few weeks. He should not watch TV either. He should not touch the cricket bat, ball or anything to do with the game. He should just be by himself. By moving away from the action, it will give him space to introspect and analyse passively. He is slowly drifting towards a burnout,” added Sandhu, who also used the same method to bounce back during his playing days.
