Rajasthan Royals will celebrate the legacy of their ‘first Royal’ Shane Warne during the Indian Premier League 2022 clash against Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai on Saturday. The Jaipur-based franchise members will be wearing a special ‘SW23’ jersey to commemorate the legacy and achievements of the Australian great. They have also invited Warne’s brother, Jason Warne, to be a part of the special occasion. The Australian’s name will remain synonymous with Rajasthan Royals as he led the side to their IPL triumph in the inaugural edition.

Warne, the greatest spinner to have graced the game, had passed away on March 4 due to heart attack. He was named as one of the five cricketers of the century by Wisden and claimed the most Test wickets — 708 — by an Australian in his 15-year career which spanned from 1992 to 2007. The Australian was the second-highest wicket-taker in the longest format of the game only behind Sri Lanka great Muttiah Muralitharan. The Ferntree Gully-native earned his first baggy green for his Test debut against India in Sydney, January 1992 and made his maiden appearance in the One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against New Zealand in Wellington, March 1993.

Rajasthan Royals urge fans to not mourn the occasion

The franchise has picked up the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai to celebrate Warne as it was the venue where he lifted the IPL trophy. Rajasthan Royals have maintained their good start to the IPL 2022 season as they have clinched victories in their six out of eight outings to be placed at the second spot with 12 points.

“It is befitting that the same stadium where Warne lifted the IPL trophy will see the cricketing world come together to pay their respects and celebrate his life. The franchise would like to iterate that it will not be an occasion to mourn, but to commemorate the great man, and salute him for his never-ending contribution to the game of cricket as well as impacting thousands of lives around the world through his words, energy, and actions both on and off the field,” the franchise said in an official statement.
