Punjab Kings (PBKS) handed Delhi Capitals (DC) a massive advantage in the crunch race to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 playoffs after their 17-run loss at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai on Monday. Delhi Capitals are now in a better position to seal the IPL 2022 playoffs berth at the fourth place among other franchises as they have 14 points from 13 matches with a healthy Net Run Rate of +0.255. It also means that PBKS are knocked out of the IPL 2022 with 12 points from 13 matches and a Net Run Rate of -0.043 which seemingly will not allow them to break into the top four.
Punjab Kings came into the match after defeating RCB by 54 runs to stay alive in the crunch race for the IPL 2022 playoffs. PBKS took on Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2022 clash on Monday with their captain Mayank Agarwal winning the toss and opting to bowl. PBKS all-rounder Liam Livingstone and death over specialist Arshdeep Singh picked up three wickets each to restrict DC to a moderate total of 159/7 in the stipulated 20 overs after Mitchell Marsh smashed 63 runs off 48 deliveries.
Punjab Kings started the chase well as their opener Jonny Bairstow (28 off 15) deliveries played a quick-fire knock with his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan chipping in with 19 runs. However, the incoming batter, failed to capitalise on their start as Jitesh Sharma (44) tried hard to keep the side in the leather hunt with Rahul Chahar (25 not out) putting up a valiant effort. Delhi Capitals banked on their fast bowler Shardul Thakur who picked up four wickets to restrict Punjab Kings to 142/9 and seal victory by 17 runs.
India legend Anil Kumble who was appointed as the Punjab Kings head coach in 2019 drew massive flak from the fans as his side stumbled out of the IPL 2022 after failing to chase a moderate total. Most fans on social media believe that the spin legend will be answerable to the Punjab Kings after assembling a decent side from the IPL mega auction but failing to make the most of it. They also believe that Punjab Kings have highly protected the services of Kumble as their coach.
