The IPL 2022 is less than two weeks away. Chennai Super Kings will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening game of the IPL in Mumbai. IPL 2022 will feature 10 teams for the first time in a decade. Apart from the eight existing teams, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans will be the new teams. These two sides will be led by KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya. The league stages of IPL 2022 will be played in Mumbai and Pune, taking into account the coronavirus protocols.

The Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, and DY Patil Stadium will host the IPL 2022 league matches. Apart from the venues in Mumbai, the Maharashtra Cricket Association stadium in Pune will host the other matches. The main reason why league matches will be played in just two venues is to reduce air travel and bio-bubble logistics.

In IPL 2021, the logistics of maintaining bio-bubbles in different cities became complicated. Biobubbles in Ahmedabad and Delhi were breached and the tournament was suspended. Thus, in order to avoid air travel and ensure that teams have to stay in limited bio-bubbles, the IPL 2022 league stages will be played in only four venues. It is on the topic of the coronavirus that the BCCI has outlined some playing conditions ahead of the IPL 2022 edition.

Coronavirus Rescheduling of Matches

With the pandemic still not gone away totally, the threat of the coronavirus disrupting matches should not be ruled out. In IPL 2021, when a team could not field 11 players due to the coronavirus pandemic, then the match would be rescheduled. If the team is still unable to field 11 players after getting it rescheduled, then they will be declared the losers and the opponent would be awarded two points.

But, in IPL 2022, this rule has been changed. Now, there will be no losing or winning. If such a situation arises, then the matter will be referred to the IPL Technical Committee. The decision the Technical Committee makes will be final and binding. However, the priority will remain that matches would be rescheduled.

Super Over Rule and DRS Review

Now, in IPL 2022, teams will have an increased number of DRS referrals. Initially, it was one. Now, it is two. However, there is a new rule related to the Super Over. If a Super Over cannot be staged after regular playtime to break the tie, then the team that is higher in the league table will be declared the winner. That means Over Rates will be monitored on a strict basis. A match might have to finish in three and a half hours to ensure that Super Overs can be conducted.

Batsman Rule in IPL 2022

This is one new rule that is really different from the rest. Initially, when a catch was taken and the batsman crossed, the new arriving batter would be at the non-striker’s end. However, in IPL 2022, if the batsman is out with a fielder taking a catch, the incoming batsman will be on strike irrespective of whether the previous two batters crossed. However, this rule will be void if the dismissal takes place in the final ball of the over.
