Mumbai Indians tumultuous run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 continued on Tuesday as they registered their tenth loss — the most in any season — against SunRisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The loss means the five-time champions were seated with a wooden spoon with six points from eight matches at a dismissal Net Run Rate of -0.577 with one match to go in the league encounter. Their arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK), meanwhile, have eight points from 13 matches and a Net Run Rate of -0.206. It means that whether Mumbai Indians win their final encounter against Delhi Capitals on May 21 or not, the Rohit Sharma-led side have recorded their worst performance in the IPL history.

IPL 2022: Making sense of Mumbai Indians performance

Mumbai Indians have looked like a pale shadow of themselves in IPL 2022. The Rohit Sharma-led side created an unwanted record of eight consecutive losses on the trot before registering their first win in the lucrative tournament this season. But their slump in form makes perfect sense as the franchise is still looking to compile their best XI from the new look squad which was formed at the IPL mega auction.

Mumbai Indians have shown that they have an array of talents including the likes of Dewald Brevis, Tilak Verma, Jofra Archer, new joinee Tristan Stubbs and batting maverick Tim David in their line-up who can prove to be a handful in the upcoming season. Their middle-order which used to have Hardik Pandya in the line-up might have looked shaky with West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard not being able to hold the fort.

IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians performance record over the years

Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise in the IPL history with five titles to their name — 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020 — which they clinched in the aforementioned years. The five-time champions had finished on fifth spot in 2021, had a similar fate in 2018 and 2016 as well while they qualified for the playoffs in 2014, 2012, 2011 and finished as runners-up in 2010. Their worst result before the ongoing season came in 2009 as they finished on the seventh spot while in the inaugural edition they ended on the fifth place.
