After the return of MS Dhoni in the captaincy role, CSK have looked like a rejuvenated unit. The four-time champions saw a captaincy transition from MS Dhoni to Ravindra Jadeja for the first eight matches before the decision was reversed. The new-look franchise managed to clinch victories in only three wins from 10 matches to remain virtually out of the IPL 2022 playoffs race but Dhoni returning to the reign has brought some much needed luck back to the side.

IPL 2022: How the match between CSK and DC unfolded

Batting first, CSK top-order batters, Ruturaj Gaikwad (41), Devon Conway (87), Shivam Dube (32) and MS Dhoni (21 not out) guided their side to the massive total against DC with crucial knocks at a stadium where every shot has its value for money. In response, CSK bowlers Moeen Ali picked up three wickets while Simranjeet Singh and Mukhesh Choudhray scalped two wickets each, to bundle out DC for a paltry 117 runs and clinch a massive win by 91 runs.

IPL 2022: How MS Dhoni reacted to the win

The victory saw CSK rise to the seventh spot with eight points in their kitty which gives them an outside chance to remain in contention for the IPL 2022 playoffs berth. However, Dhoni, believes that his side should enjoy the rest of the reason and remain prepared for the next game without thinking much about their chances of making it to the next stage. “I am not a big fan of maths. Even in school I wasn’t good at it. Thinking of the NRR doesn’t help. You just want to enjoy the IPL. When two other teams are playing, you don’t want to be under pressure and thinking. You just have to think about what to do in the next game. If we make the playoffs, great. But even if we don’t it’s not the end of the world,” Dhoni said at the post-match interview.

“It really helps. It would have been better if we would have had a win like this somewhere early. It was a perfect game. The batters did really well. It was a toss where we wanted to win and field first, but in the heart, I was fine to lose the toss. The ball stops and comes, and it behaves only after 13-14 overs. Everybody contributed a bit. Runs on the board really help, and it was important to restrict their big-hitters. Both Simarjeet and Mukesh have taken time to mature. They have the capability, the more they play, the better they’ll get at game sense.”
