Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) dream run in their debut Indian Premier League (IPL) season came to an end as they were beaten by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 14 runs in the eliminator at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. RCB will be facing Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Qualifier 2 to be held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday. Chasing a massive total of 207/4, LSG lost their in-form opener, Quinton de Kock, for six runs. However, skipper KL Rahul and Manan Vohra managed to keep things going at a steady rate as the duo took the score to 41 before losing Vohra to a Hazlewood delivery. Deepak Hooda joined the skipper at the crease and anchored the innings. The duo put together a healthy partnership and RCB wanted a breakthrough. That crucial wicket was provided by Wanindu Hasaranga who bowled the dangerous-looking Hooda (45 runs off 26 balls).

Things were looking bleak for LSG with the score at 137/3 in 14.4 overs. However, Rahul was not ready to give up as he took the fight to RCB with some fantastic stroke play. LSG lost Stoinis after scoring 9 runs as the pressure mounted upon the Lucknow side. LSG’s fightback suffered a telling blow in the 19th over as they lost the brilliant KL Rahul (79 runs off 58) and Krunal Pandya in successive deliveries of Josh Hazlewood. Dushmantha Chameera and Evin Lewis could only add 13 runs to the score as LSG’s chase came to an end at 193/4. Hazlewood took three crucial wickets for RCB and Mohammed Siraj, Harshal Patel and Hasaranga picked one wicket each.

In the first innings, Rajat Patidar’s blistering century powered RCB to 207/4 in 20 overs. After losing the toss and asked to bat, the Bangalore side lost their captain Faf du Plessis in the first over for a golden duck. Opener Virat Kohli was joined by Rajat Patidar and the duo steadied the innings. Kohli (25 from 24 balls) was the next to go with score at 70. Glenn Maxwell came to the crease and smashed Ravi Bishnoi for a six. He was dismissed in the 11th over for just 9 runs with the team score at 86. Mahipal Lomror joined Rajat and tried to stitch together a good looking partnership but their stand was broken 29 runs later. With the score at 115/4, RCB was desperate for a partner to support Rajat at the other end. That came from the in-form batter Dinesh Karthik and the duo notched up a game-changing the partnership of 92 runs as RCB finished the innings at 207/4. Rajat Patidar scored 112 in just 54 balls and Dinesh Karthik hit 37 runs off 23 deliveries. Mohsin Khan, Krunal Pandya, Avesh Khan and Ravi Bishnoi took one wicket each for LSG.
