KL Rahul played a pivotal role in Lucknow Super Giants’ victory over Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2022 clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday and in the process extended his love affair with the five-time champions.

It was a one-man-show from the LSG captain as his unbeaten knock of 103 runs off 62 deliveries helped the side post a challenging total of 168/6 with top-order batter Manish Pandey being the second highest scorer of the team with 22 runs.

The knock from Rahul was a testament to the fact that he is one of the finest batters across formats in the world. He went about his innings cautiously in the beginning, smashed the odds balls to the boundary, and changed gears to take calculated risks to ensure his side reaches to a defendable total.

KL Rahul becomes first to score three IPL centuries an opponent

The knock was also special as it helped him become the first player in the lucrative tournament to record three centuries against one franchise — Mumbai Indians.

Rahul had played an identical knock of an unbeaten 103 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai in the IPL 2022 and the innings on Sunday marked his second consecutive ton against the same opponent in the same edition of the lucrative tournament.

His first century — 100* — against Mumbai Indians came in 2019 at the Wankhede Stadium.

KL Rahul averages over 70 against Mumbai Indians

Rahul has looked like the best version of himself against Mumbai Indians. He has notched up the scores of 94, 71*, 100*, 17, 77, 60*, 21, 103*, 103* in his last nine innings against the Mumbai franchise.

The India opener has, thus, accumulated 646 runs at an average 71.77.

KL Rahul tried to play according to the situation

And there could be no one better than the man himself to explain his mindset through his match-winning knock against Mumbai Indians on Sunday. His words, interestingly, are a fair reflection of the maturity and the sense of responsibility that he brings into the side as a captain.

“Trying to play according to the situation, see what’s expected out of me. Enjoying batting, enjoying the responsibility. Fingers crossed I can keep doing the right things,” the LSG captain said at the post match interview.

“First thought was just get bat on ball, feel good, get that single. When you’ve played in a venue that’s been good to me previously, but not so much in the last two games, just wanted to get that single first. Lucky that I could score as much as I did.”
