Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pulled off a stunning two-run win against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a last-ball thriller at Dr DY Patil Stadium on Wednesday to qualify for playoffs of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. After winning the toss and opting to bat, the LSG openers smashed KKR bowlers all across the park to take the score to 210/0. Quinton de Kock came up with one of his best performances as he scored 140 runs off just 70 balls. LSG skipper KL Rahul supported the onslaught of his opening partner by hitting a half-century (68 off 51 balls). de Kock hit 10 boundaries and 10 sixes in his swashbuckling innings. LSG’s opening duo stitched up the highest ever opening stand in IPL history as they left KKR bowlers clueless.

Chasing a challenging target, KKR lost their opener, Venkatesh Iyer, in the first over. In the third over, lost Abhijeet Tomar with only 9 runs on the board. Nitish Rana and KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer steadied the ship with a partnership of 56 runs. The partnership was broken in the eighth over as Nitish Rana departed after scoring 42 runs in 22 balls. Following this, Shreyas (50 off 29 deliveries) and Sam Billings lead the fightback before losing the skipper in the 14th over.

Things looked bleak as KKR lost Sam Billings (36) and Andre Russel in the 16th and 17th over with the target still 61 runs away. However, Rinku Singh (40 off 15) and Sunil Narine (21 off 7) almost did the impossible and took the Kolkata side over the line but fell short in the last two balls of the match. Mohsin Khan’s spell was crucial in LSG’s victory as he scalped three crucial wickets and gave away only 20 runs in four overs. Marcus Stoinis also took three wickets in his two overs.
