David Warner (92 not out) and Rovman Powell (67 not out) put up a batting exhibition on show for Delhi Capitals against SunRisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2022 contest at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday. The fiery Australia batter hit 12 boundaries and three sixes his unbeaten 58-ball stay while the West Indies swashbuckling batter smashed three boundaries and six sixes in his 35 balls unbeaten innings to guide the capital franchise to a mammoth 2017/3 which later proved to be crucial in their 21-run win.

Warner looked in cruise control of the proceedings against his former franchise after losing his opening partner Mandeep Singh (0) in the first over. He was later joined by Powell as the duo forged an unbeaten 122-run stand for the sixth wicket. The duo shared a bit of camaraderie in the middle as Powell was hoping to see Warner get to his century after a stunning effort but the Australian had thought about the situation differently.

“I was trying my best. I wanted him to get to a hundred, but he asked me to hit as hard as I could, and wasn’t bothered about his own hundred (about Warner),” Powell said in the mid-innings interview.
“Sometimes you plan for a particular ball, be it the slower or the yorker, but the pitch is so good and the ball was coming on nicely. I had a conversation with (Rishabh) Pant a few days back in the hotel room, he asked me where I wanted to bat, I just asked him to have trust in me. I have improved my game against the spinners as well as the pacers, want to give myself a chance, play some 10-15 balls and then play the shots. The wicket is very good, but one side is very long, 207 is a very good score and we trust our bowlers to defend this score,” the West Indies batter said.

David Warner did not need extra motivation against SRH

It could be speculated that a brilliant knock from Warner against SRH was always on the cards as he was released by the franchise for his poor runs in the previous season. He had single-handedly helped the Hyderabad franchise clinch their first and only title in 2016 but his departure from the side did not go down well. It is, thus, that he said he didn’t need extra motivation to perform against them.

“It’s a really nice wicket, I’ve had some success here. I knew if I played my strokes, it was going to come off. Challenging here in Mumbai with the humidity and I was cooked there towards the back end, I am getting older. Having Rovman at the other end was amazing. I was glad he was at the other end. I didn’t need extra motivation (playing against SRH), we’ve seen what’s happened before in the past, it was good to get the win on the board. It was a little bit silly of me to try and run fast (while batting with Powell),” Warner said at the post match interview.
