Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has announced that its all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been ruled out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 due to a rib injury. “Ravindra Jadeja reported a bruised rib and was unavailable for Chennai Super Kings’ game against Delhi Capitals on Sunday. He was under observation and based on medical advice he has been ruled out for the rest of the IPL season,” the franchise said in a statement. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed the same to several media outlets. “Ravindra Jadeja has a bruised rib and he won’t be playing CSK’s next two games. He has already gone home,” he said.

Jadeja hurt himself in the IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) while attempting to take a catch. He was subsequently kept out of CSK’s match against Delhi Capitals. This is the first match he missed for CSK since 2012.  Despite the official announcement that Jadeja is injured, sources that track development in the CSK camp claimed that he has been dropped.

Ravindra Jadeja was appointed as CSK’s captain ahead of the 2022 season. But a string of poor results saw him getting replaced by the former captain MS Dhoni. The pressure of captaincy seems to have affected his overall performance as well with the all-rounder scoring just 110 runs from 10 innings and scalping just five wickets. Taking back the mantle, Dhoni said that Jadeja knew that he’d be captaining CSK this year.

“I think Jadeja knew last season he’d be captaining this year. For the first two games, I oversaw his work and let him be later. I insisted he’d take his own decisions and responsibility for them. You cannot spoon-feed everything to them. Once you become captain, it means a lot of demands come in and can affect the player’s performance and occupy their mind which I think was the case with him. I think captaincy burdened his prep and performances, it meant he could not go with the bat and ball with the same intensity, we had a deep-midwicket fielder,” he said.
