Cricket is a global sport that has a massive fan base around the globe. While fans appreciate a player’s performance, they also slam that player only if he fails to perform. Over the years, we have seen this has been happening. Even, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is no different. Players like Daniel Sams and Dan Christian have already faced online abuse.

Dan Christian and Jorgia Dunn

Australia player Glenn Maxwell, teammate Dan Christian and his pregnant partner Jorgia Dunn have faced online abuse after their Indian Premier League (IPL) team Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) match in the Eliminator against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2021.

However, RCB backed his players and said that the team is 100 per cent behind them and won’t tolerate any abuse.

“We’re 100% with you @danchristian54 and we will not tolerate online abuse towards players and especially towards their families and loved ones,” tweeted RCB. “Winning and losing are a part of this beautiful game we all love. Our players put in the hard work day in and day out to reach the level they’re at. They give it their everything to try and win the game for us!”

Christian alleged that his pregnant partner Jorgia Dunn was attacked on social media after he failed to do well for RCB. Christian, however, scored only nine runs and went wicket-less while giving away 29 runs from 1.4 overs at an economy rate of 17.40.

“Check out the comments section of my partner’s Instagram post. I didn’t have a great game tonight, but that’s sport. However please leave her out of it,” Christian wrote on Instagram.

However, an angry Maxwell lashed out at the online trolls, calling them ‘garbage’ and ‘absolutely disgusting,’ even as Christian urged that his partner should be kept out of it.

“Great season by RCB, unfortunately we fell well short of where we thought we should be. Doesn’t take away from an amazing season. Some of the garbage that has been flowing on social media is absolutely disgusting,” Maxwell wrote in a post on his Twitter handle.

“We are human beings who are giving out best each and every day. Try being a decent person maybe instead of spreading abuse. Thank you to the REAL fans that shared love and appreciation for the players giving their all. Unfortunately, there is some horrible people out there that make social media a horrible place to be. It is unacceptable. Please don’t be like them,” he further added.

Daniel Sams

Daniel Sams too has faced social media abuses from Mumbai Indians supporters after their defeat to KKR as well. While Mumbai Indians failed to put pressure on the opponents in the IPL 2022 so far, the side could have won the match against KKR in the cash-rich league.

But, KKR all-rounder Pat Cummins smashed the joint-fastest fifty and sealed the deal for KKR. However, he took on Daniel Sams in the process as Sams conceded 35 runs. Soon after Mumbai lost the game, the Mumbai Indians fans lashed out at Sams on social media platforms as well.

“This will be hard to digest, the way it turned out in the last few overs. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us,” a dejected MI captain Rohit Sharma said at the post-match presentation.

Pat Cummins, who was adjudged the player of the match award, was himself surprised too after playing the knock. “I probably think I’m most surprised by that innings. I’m glad that it came off. I was thinking of having a swing if it was in my area. Wasn’t trying to overthink it. Very satisfying to do it on my first game this season. Was just trying to pepper the shorter boundary,” he said.
