Chennai Super Kings are in contention for qualifying for the IPL 2022 playoffs after a poor start to the season. After the return of MS Dhoni in the captaincy role, CSK have looked like a rejuvenated unit. The four-time champions saw a captaincy transition from MS Dhoni to Ravindra Jadeja for the first eight matches before the decision was reversed. The new-look franchise managed to clinch victories in only three wins from 10 matches to remain virtually out of the IPL 2022 playoffs race but Dhoni returning to the reign has brought some much needed luck back to the side.

Moreover their massive win against Delhi Capitals have kept them in contention for the IPL 2022 playoffs. Batting first, CSK top-order batters, Ruturaj Gaikwad (41), Devon Conway (87), Shivam Dube (32) and MS Dhoni (21 not out) guided their side to the massive total against DC with crucial knocks at a stadium where every shot has its value for money. In response, CSK bowlers Moeen Ali picked up three wickets while Simranjeet Singh and Mukhesh Choudhray scalped two wickets each, to bundle out DC for a paltry 117 runs and clinch a massive win by 91 runs.

Chennai Super Kings IPL 2022 Playoffs: Qualification scenario

CSK have their upcoming matches scheduled against MI at the Wankhede Stadium on May 12, vs GT at the Wankhede Stadium on May 15, vs RR at the Brabourne Stadium on May 20. The MS Dhoni-led side can go through to the playoffs only if there is a tie for 4th place at 14 points. The four-time champions can even finish third as their win over DC has given a boost to their NRR as it reads +0.028.

CSK also have the chance to finish third depending on the other franchises result and here is how it stands: RR lose all their remaining 3 matches to finish with 14, RCB lose both their remaining 2 matches to finish with 14, DC win one of their next 3 matches (beat RR but lose to PBKS and MI) as they have a healthy NRR to finish with 12, SRH win only 1 of their remaining 3 matches (beat KKR, lose to MI and lose PBKS) to finish with 12 points, KKR win one of their next 2 matches (Beat SRH but lose to LSG) to finish with 12 points, PBKS win 2 of their next 3 matches (Beat RCB, beat DC but lose to SRH) to finish with 14 points but with a lesser NRR than CSK. The four-time champions would need to win their next three matches by a big margin to finish on the third spot after a 4-way tie on 14 points.
