Hartford Wolf Pack will take on the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL USA on November 16 at XL Center. In one of the craziest games of the early season, the Hartford Wolf Pack and Charlotte Checkers combined for 10 goals in the last forty minutes after an empty first period. The Checkers eventually won in a shootout, 6-5, to record their first away victory of the year. Goaltenders Mack Guzda and Dylan Garand stopped each of the first seven shooters, but Gerry Mayhew stepped up in the fourth round’s bottom half. With the outcome of the match on his stick, Mayhew fired a shot at Garand’s five-hole that the goaltender first blocked, but the puck eventually trickled through to give the Checkers the win.
One significant moment in the scoreless opening frame was Dylan Garand’s highlight-reel save of Checkers forward Riley Nash. The Checkers’ powerplay was stopped when Garand dove across the crease and flashed the leather at Nash. Then, 51 seconds into the second half, C.J. Smith scored Hartford’s first goal. Smith scored his fourth goal of the year by going between the hash markers and sniping home a bouncing ball that Matt Kiersted was unable to control. Despite scoring first, the Checkers would steal the lead and score four times in a 10:40 period. Three minutes into the period, Anton Levtchi’s fourth goal of the year brought the score to 1-1.

Levtchi was fed in the attacking zone by Chris Tierney as the game transitioned to four on four. The first of several Charlotte goals were scored by the rookie forward, who used a backhand move to deke out Garand. At 7:20, Mayhew took the Checkers their first lead of the game by swatting a rebound out of the air while the team was on the man advantage to make the score 2-1.
