South Africa registered their second win in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 as they successfully defeated Pakistan by six runs in Mount Maunganui after putting up a target of 223. Laura Wolvaardt and captain Sune Luus smashed half-centuries while the speedster Shabnim Ismail bagged three scalps to ensure Pakistan fell short despite trying hard to win.

After opting to bowl first, Fatima Sana was provided with the first breakthrough in the third over while Diana Baig got a wicket in the eighth as well and South Africa were reduced to 21 for 2 after the powerplay. However, it was the partnership of Luus and Wolvaardt that started adding runs slowly to put the innings back on track. They added 89 off 131 deliveries. They took the team past 100.

With the final 20 overs remaining of the innings, the responsibility came on Laura Wolvaardt but, Ghulam Fatima removed the opener for 75 off 91. Three balls later, she also dismissed Mignon du Preez on a duck as South Africa slipped to 110 for 4. It became worse when Marizanne Kapp also got out soon after and they were at 120 for 5.

However, Chloe Tryon and Luus made 55 off 68 and then Trisha Chetty and Luus stitched 34 off 26 to ensure South Africa put a good score at the end of the innings.

While chasing, Pakistan made a good start but were dented by a double-wicket maiden from Shabnim Ismail. She removed Sidra Ameen and Bismah Maroof to leave them 26 for 2 in the seventh over. Nahida Khan (40) and Omaima Sohail (65) then kept the chase alive with a stand of 69 but took 113 deliveries as the asking rate continued to increase as well.

However, Omaima Sohail got her maiden World Cup half-century – her third in the format – but Masabata Klaas, Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka then dismantled Pakistan and left them struggling at 162 for 6. Pakistan needed 67 in the final ten overs where Nida Dar’s attacking display gave them hope. Needing 30 in the final three overs, Diana Baig smashed 10 off 5 to bring the equation down to 10 off the final over as well. However, Dar’s run out in the penultimate over left them short of 6 runs as well.

Brief scores:

South Africa 223/9 in 50 overs (Laura Wolvaardt 75; Fatima Sana 3-43) beat Pakistan 217 in 49.5 overs (Omaima Sohail 65; Shabnim Ismail 3-41) by six runs.
