Leon Goretzka began his football career in 1999 with Werner SV 06 Bochum, where he remained for two years until moving to VfL Bochum in 2001. On August 4, 2012, he made his professional debut for Bochum against Dynamo Dresden in the 2. Bundesliga. He was Bochum’s standout player throughout their thrilling 2012–2013 season as they nearly avoided relegation.
