Liverpool have one foot in the Champions League final and will travel to Spain to take on Villarreal in the second leg of the semi-final on Tuesday. The first leg at Anfield ended 2-0 in favour of the Reds courtesy of an own goal by Pervis Estupinan and Sadio Mane’s second-half goal. Meanwhile Villearreal are heading into the clash on the back of some poor form, having lost 2-1 to Alaves in the La Liga fixture on Saturday. On the other hand, Jurgen Klopp’s side are in an impressive run of form having defeated Newcastle United 1-0 to extend their winning streak to five games across all competitions. Villarreal made it this far in the tournament courtesy of Unai Emery’s defensive masterclass, but the Spaniard’s game-plan backfired in the away leg in England, he will now have to find a way to overturn a two goal deficit.

Villarreal have to repeat what Liverpool did in 2019

In the first leg, Jordan Henderson’s deflected effort looped over Geronimo Rulli and into the far post to take the lead before Mane poked in from Mohamed Salah’s assist to seal the win. Meanwhile the Yellow Submarine failed to register even a single shot on target. The Spanish outfit’s Champions League hangover appeared to be in full effect as they went down 2-1 to Alaves. Goals from Victor Laguardia and Gonzalo Escalante helped Alaves get the better of a much changed Villareal side, who pulled one back through Samuel Chukweze. Only one team has overturned a two goal deficit in the champions League semi-final, and that was liverpool in 2019, when they defeated Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield to secure a 4-3 aggregate win and enter the final and thereby beat Tottenham to lift the title.

Quadruple chasing Liverpool

Liverpool are very well on course to secure a quadruple, having already won the EFL Cup, will play Chelsea in the FA Cup final next month, placed second in the Premier League standings and have one foot in the champions League final. The Reds put up another dominant performance to get the better of in-form Magpies who were on a four-game winning streak. Naby Keita scored the lone goal of the match at St James’ Park to take all three points and stay close to the Leaders Manchester City. Meanwhile defensively also Klopp’ side are pretty solid having not conceded a goal in their last four wins. The Reds have also not lost an away game since December.

Probable Lineups

Villarreal boss Emery has some injury issue with Arnaut Danjuma ruled out for the Alaves clash due to discomfort. Albert Moreno and Yeremi Pino still absent while Gerard Moreno is a major doubt due to a hamstring problem.

In contrast, Klopp has an almost fully fit squad at his disposal, with Roberto Firimo being the only doubtful because of a foot injury. Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas both returned from illness to make the bench for the win over Magpies.

Villarreal possible starting lineup: Rulli, Foyth, Albiol, Torres, Estupinan, Capoe, Coquelin, Parejo, Lo Celso, chukwueze, Dia

Liverpool possible starting lineup: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago, Salah, Mane, Diaz.
