Velez Sarsfield got the better of River Plate courtesy of Lucas Janson’s lone goal in the first leg, the second leg had ended in a goalless draw. Since then, Velez has not won a single game, recording four draws and one defeat in five league games. In their recent outing against Godoy Cruz, defender Diego Godin canceled out Pier Barrios’ opener to share the spoils. It was Velez’ fourth successive draw. The result has left them languishing at the 25th place in the Argentine top division table with just 9 points from 11 games.
Talleres Córdoba, on the other hand, are sitting one place below them with equal points but with one game in hand. The Blue and Whites defeated Colon 3-1 over two legs in the last-16 tie. The first leg at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes ended in 1-1. And then, in the second leg, goals from Federico Girotti and Angelo Martino helped the Tagliatelle go through to the next round. Meanwhile in their last game at San Lorenzo on July 25, Matias Catalan opened the scoring before Nahuel Barrios equalised for the hosts to share the points.
