Athletic Bilbao travel to Mestalla on Thursday night for a difficult clash against Valencia in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. Unlike previous seasons, these two sides are not where many expect them to be at this point in the season. They both are struggling for form and consistency and are nowhere near the Champions League positions. However, they will be keen to put their disappointing La Liga form aside and hope for better fortune in Copa del Rey.

As things stand, both clubs are languishing in mid-table positions in the La Liga standings. Valencia are sitting at the 12th spot in the table with 20 points from 17 games, while Athletic Bilbao are placed eight in the table with 26 points from 18 matches. They are not that far away from each other in the standings and Valencia also have a game in hand, which could help them close that gap in the table.

Besides, they both are also experiencing poor run of results in recent games. Valencia are winless in their last three La Liga games, while Athletic Bilbao are winless in their last four matches in the league. The home side drew their last game against Almeria at the weekend and the visitors were beaten by league title holders Real Madrid 2-0. In the last round of the Copa del Rey, Valencia got past Sporting Gijon 4-0, while Athletic Bilbao defeated Espanyol 1-0.
