After Ghana captain Ayew missed a golden opportunity to give his team the lead when his penalty was saved, Uruguay went two goals ahead in the first half as Giorgian de Arrascaeta combined with Suarez to score twice. Uruguay appeared to be heading to the last 16, but a late goal from South Korea saw them defeat Portugal 2-1 and advance at the expense of the South American team. De Arrascaeta was Uruguay’s hero after Sergio Rochet saved Ghana’s penalty. He was on hand to head over the line after Lawrence Ati-Zigi parried a Suarez shot. Six minutes later, he and Suarez combined once more, this time more impressively.

Ayew had a fantastic opportunity to put Ghana ahead and exorcise his team’s demons by exacting penalty revenge on Uruguay for the 2010 World Cup debacle. However, the attacker’s effort was poor, and Sergio Rochet was able to save it, allowing Uruguay to go on and take the lead. Uruguay is eliminated from the competition because South Korea scored more goals in the group stage. Instead, Korea will advance to the next round, where they will face the winner of Group G, which could be Brazil.

Uruguay rue draw against South Korea

Uruguay could have had a golden chance to qualify for the last 16 of the tournament despite losing the first match against Portugal. The South American nation was up against South Korea. On paper, Uruguay is a stronger side and given the players they have in their ranks, they should have taken a comfortable victory. However, Luis Suarez and co were frustrated by the Koreans and that is a match they will rue for quite a while.

Suarez, Cavani’s last world cup ends in tears

It was not how Luis Suarez or Edionson Cavani would have wanted their world cup careers to have gotten over sure. Both players are in the twilight years of their respective careers and this, without question, was their last world cup. Even though they were not the favourites going into the tournament, they would have wanted to at least reach the knockout stages.

Underwhelming campaign for Uruguay

Uruguay have always been one of the big teams in world football. The inaugural FIFA World Cup champions are still considered as a heavyweight in South American football. However, their performance i the 2022 edition of the competition was anything but. Losing to Portugal and failing to win against South Korea clearly had their consequences and they will have to regroup and come back four years later with hopefully a better system in place.
