Union SG will host Rangers FC in the first leg of their third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League at Den Dreef on Tuesday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of victories in their respective league fixtures. The hosts secured a narrow 1-0 win over Charleroi in a Belgian Pro League fixture last weekend, while the Scottish outfit got the better of Livingston 2-1 on the same day.  Union SG secured a spot in the third round of Champions League qualification by finishing second in the playoff in the Belgian First Division A in 2021-22, while Rangers finished second in the Scottish Premier League last term.

Last Saturday at Stade Joseph Marien, Union SG got the better of Charleroi courtesy of Ross Sykes’ lone strike in the 56th minute. It was the Brussels outfit’s second league game of the season, the first one against STVV ended 1-1. Prior to that, Karel Geraerts’ side had an impressive pre-season, not losing any of their six friendlies, recording three-wins and three draws. Les Unionistes netted 11 times and conceded just six in those six friendlies. The Belgian outfit is certainly going to be the underdogs for the two-legged tie, but they are not going to be an easy opponent by any means.

Rangers, on the other hand, kicked off their 2022-23 league season with a come from behind win at Livingston. The hosts took an early lead through Jon Nouble’s goal, but second half strikes from Scott Arfield and James Tavernier helped the Teddy Bears take all three points at Almondvale Stadium. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side lost the 2021-22 Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt 5-4 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in 120 minutes. Rangers have been active this summer, signing the likes of Ben Davies, Ridvan Yilmaz, Rabbi Matondo, Antonio Colak, Tom Lawrence, John Scouttar and Malik Tillman to bolster the squad.
