Union Berlin will host Wolfsburg in a DFB-Pokal round of 16 fixture at Alte Foersterei on Tuesday night. Both sides were involved in Bundesliga action in the weekend, with the hosts getting the better of Hertha Berlin 2-0, while Wolfsburg suffered a 2-1 defeat to Werder Bremen. The victory helped Union Berlin to move to second spot in the German top flight standings, having collected 36 points from 18 games, just two adrift of leaders Bayern Munich. The visitors, meanwhile, are sitting at the seventh position, with 29 points to their name. Meanwhile, the previous meeting between these two sides ended in a 2-0 win over Union Berlin, courtesy of second half efforts from Siebatcheu and Becker, more than four months ago.

Union Berlin are in stunning form having won each of their three games since the resumption of competitive action following the World Cup break, earlier this month. Urs Fischer’s side restarted their Bundesliga campaign, with a 3-1 win over Hoffenheim, before getting the better of Werder Bremen (2-1) and Hertha Berlin. Last time out, Die Eisernen defeated Herth Berlin, courtesy of goals from Danilo Doekhi and Paul Seghuin. It was their 1th1 top flight victory of the season and Union Berlin will be aiming to replicate their league-form into the Cup competition. With a Europa League last-32 against Ajax awaiting, Fischer may be hoping to add another competition to the mix.
As for Wolfsburg, the defeat to Hertha Berlin last Saturday ended their 10-game unbeaten run in the top flight. Niclas Fulkryg scored a brace for Bremen, while the Wolves managed to pull one back through Kevin Paedes’ 90th-minute strike. However, the 10-game unbeaten run turned around a slow start under Niko Kovac to put them firmly in contention for a top-six finish, that will earn them a European qualification, should they continue their recent form till the end of the campaign. Prior to the loss to Bremen, Wolfsburg thrashed SC Freiburg (6-0) and Hertha Berlin (5-0). The Wolves don’t have European commitment unlike their forthcoming opponents, therefore Kovac is likely to opt for a strong starting lineup.
Union Berlin Probable line-up: Grill, Jaeckel, Knoche, Leite, Juranovic, Haraguchi, Khedira, Haberer, Giesselmann, Siebatcheu, Michel
Wolfsburg probable line-up: Casteels, Baku, Bornauw, Lacroix, Otavio, Paredes, Arnold, Guilavogui, Gerhardt, Marmoush, Wind
