Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton will commence their 2022-23 Premier League season at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on Saturday. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of defeats in their final friendly of the summer. The hosts suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Roma last Saturday, while Southampton were beaten 2-1 by Villarreal on the same day. Spurs had an impressive 2021-22 Premier League season, finishing fourth in the standings to earn Champions League qualification and head coach Antonio Conte will be aiming to make a positive start to his first full season at the club. Southampton, on the other hand, finished 15th in the league table last term, just five points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham had a mixed pre-season, registering two wins, one draw and a defeat in four friendlies. In their last game against Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma, Roger Ibanez’ lone strike on the half-hour mark separated the two sides. Prior to that, Spurs got the better of Rangers 2-1 courtesy of Harry Kane’s brace. Meanwhile Conte’s side have been active in the transfer market, signing the likes of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Djed Spence, Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster on permanent deals, while defender Clement Lenglet has arrived on a loan deal to bolster the squad.
Southampton, on the other hand, registered just one win from their five pre-season friendlies, while two of the remaining four games ended in defeats. In their last game against Villarreal, Joe Aribo canceled out Yeremy Pino’s opener before Gerard Moreno netted the winner for the Yellow Submarine. Ralph Hasenguttle’s side won just nine of their 38 league games last term and the club’s supporters would be expecting a much improved performance this season. The Saints have been busy in the transfer market, bringing in Gavin Bazunu, Sekou Mara, Romeo Lavia, Armel Bella-Ketchup, Joe Aribo and Mateusz Lis, meanwhile striker Shane Long and goalkeeper Forester have departed the club.
Tottenham’s new signing Richarlison is unavailable due to suspension while midfielder Oliver Skip is sidelined with a foot injury. Conte is likely to go with a 3-4-3 formation with Kane leading the line, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski are expected to join the english-man in attack. Bentancur could pull the strings in the midfield alongside Hojberg. Ivan Perisic and Matt Doherty are likely to occupy the flanks. As for Southampton, new arrival Arino is expected to partner Adams up front. Romeo Lavia could sit in front of the back-three with Stuart Armstrong and James Ward-Prowse deployed in a slightly advanced role in the midfield. Meanwhile Nethan Tella, Theo Walcott and Tino Livarmento are unavailable due to injuries.
