Tottenham Hotspur announced on Monday in a statement that Head Coach Nuno Espirito Santo has been relieved of his duties after only 17 games in charge. The Portuguese manager’s most recent match in charge was a 3-0 home defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday. Nuno’s departure leaves the North London club in eighth place in the table, 10 points behind current leaders Chelsea. Spurs have lost five of their last seven matches and the pressure on Nuno and owner Daniel Levy has been growing for a while now. Levy reportedly held a meeting with representatives of the club’s supporters on Sunday and concluded that a change was imperative.

Fabio Paratici, Managing Director of Football, said: “I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed and I regret that we have had to take this decision. Nuno is a true gentleman and will always be welcome here. We should like to thank him and his coaching staff and wish them well for the future.” The club added that an update on the coaching situation would follow in due course.

POSITIVE START, DISMAL FORM SINCE

In June, the 47-year-old was named as Jose Mourinho’s permanent replacement on a two-year contract. Nuno started the league season in spectacular fashion, leading Tottenham to three straight victories over Manchester City, Wolves, and Watford, putting the club atop the table. Spurs’ results have since dipped, with only two wins in seven league games. The club’s style of play has also been criticised, with the team scoring only nine goals in ten league games, which is tied for second-lowest in the league.

Furthermore, in two hours and sixteen minutes, the team has failed to register a shot on target in the league. Their most recent goal was Harry Kane’s header in the 44th minute of West Ham United’s defeat on Sunday, October 24.

Tottenham Hotspur, who reached the UEFA Champions League Final in 2019, have also struggled in the newly formed UEFA Europa Conference League this season. After three games, the club is third in their group, trailing Rennes and Vitesse. Following the dismissal of Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019, Spurs will be looking for their fourth permanent manager in the last three years. The Argentine was replaced by Jose Mourinho, who lasted only 17 months before being fired. Following Mourinho’s departure, former player Ryan Mason oversaw the team for seven matches before Nuno was appointed after a lengthy managerial search.

Tottenham’s next game is against Vitesse Arnhem in the UEFA Europa Conference League at home on Thursday, followed by a trip to Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
