Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos will miss the final day La Liga fixture against Villarreal after testing positive for COVID-19. The midfield general was not included in Zinedine Zidane’s squad for last weekend’s 1-0 victory at Athletic Club as a precaution after coming into close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. Real Madrid have now released an official statement confirming the 31-year old has returned a positive test result for corona virus. Kroos was crucial for the Los Blancos going into the D-day as the title is still undecided.

Real Madrid are second in the league with 81 points form 37 games, two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid with one game remaining.

Los Blancos will need to win their final match against the Yellow Submarine at home and hope that Atletico Madrid draw or lose in its final game against Real Valladolid to win the title.

Diego Simeone’s side won their last match against Osasuna 2-1.

Unavailability of Toni Kroos a big loss

Toni Kroos has been pivotal to Zinedine Zidane’s plans especially this season. This is because Madrid players suffered from an unusally high number of injuries.

The German international with Luka Modric and Casemiro form a the midfield trio that is their greatest strength.

They reached the semifinals of Champions League and are still in contention for the La Liga title. Kroos has provided 10 assist’s and scored three goals in the League so far.

He is behind only Iago Aspas (12) and Marcos Llorente (11) in the list of top assists.

He will miss the last match of the season as per the COVID-19 La Liga guidelines regarding mandatory self isolation. However, he is unlikely to miss the Euro 2020 for Germany starting from June 11.

Kroos has made 101 appearances for the national team and scored 17 goals. Winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup was the high point of his international career.
