Sweden will host Serbia in an UEFA Nations League group stage fixture at the Friends Arena on Thursday. Both sides picked up one win and suffered one defeat in their opening two games of their 2022 Nations League. Sweden began their campaign with a 2-0 win over Slovenia before losing 2-1 to Norway in their last outing. Meanwhile Serbia didn’t have a great start, losing 1-0 to Norway, but then picked up themselves to thrash Slovenia 4-1 at home. The head-to-head record is on an even footing, out of two games played between the two teams, both have won once. Since the form of both the  teams have been pretty similar, it’s fair to expect a very close and competitive game between the pair.

Sweden’s last game against Norway, was a harsh reminder of their lack of solidity in the defence. Norway’s star-striker Erling Haaland managed to score twice before Anthony Elanga netted a late consolation goal for the Blue and Yellow. Janne Andersson’s side failed to create any clear cut chances despite having the majority of the ball possession, while the visitors were simply brilliant on their counter-attacks. Meanwhile Blagult won’t be taking part in this year’s World Cup after losing the playoff to Poland and therefore will be desperate to put up a good show in the Nations League.

Unlike their hosts, Serbia made it to the World Cup finals, and they did it in thrilling fashion by snatching an automatic spot away from Portugal Late on in their qualifying match. For Dragon Stojkovic’s side, these Nations League games are more like preparations for the upcoming global event in November. In their last game against Slovenia at the Red Star Stadium, goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Luka Jovic, Nemanja Randonjic helped them take all three points. It was Serbia’s seventh victory in their last 10 games across all competitions.

Probable Lineups

Sweden has a number of absentees. Victor Lindelof, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Albin Ekdal and Martin Olsson are sidelined with injuries. Meanwhile winger Dejan Kulusevski will be suspended after being booked in both opening games. Therefore Robin Quaison or Elanga could feature in the front three.

As for Serbia, Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic is injured at the moment and will not feature on Thursday. Stojkovic could make a defensive change, bringing in Milos Veljkovic in place of Erhan Masovic. In the absence of Vlahovic, Aleksandar Mitrovic will lead the attack.

Sweden probable starting lineup: Olsen, Krafth, Milosevic, Nilsson, Augustinsson, Forsberg, Karlstrom, Svanberg, Elanga, Isak, Claesson

Serbia probable starting lineup: V. Milinkovic-Savic, Pavlovic, Milenkovic, Veljkovic, Lazovic, Lukic, Gudelj Kostic, S. Milinkovic-Savic, Tadic, A. Mitrovic
