Scottish giants Rangers FC will kick off their preparations for the 2022-23 campaign with a pre-season friendly in Portugal against Championship side Sunderland. The English outfit had an impressive 2021-22 season, earning promotion to the Championship with a 2-0 victory in the play-off final against Wycombe Wanderers. Meanwhile Rangers finished second behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership points table. The last time these two sides faced each other was back in 1999, when the light blues got the better of the English club with a scoreline of 3-1.

Sunderland spent four successive seasons in League One, before earning promotion to the championship last season. The appointment of head coach Alex Neil proved to be a major turning point in their season, as they went on a 15-game unbeaten run before beating Wycombe at the Wembley stadium to earn promotion. The Black Cats will play six pre-season friendlies, including two is Portugal against Rangers and AS Roma, before beginning their Championship season against Coventry City on July 31.

Rangers, on the other hand, also had a memorable 2021-22 season. Although they failed to retain the Scottish league title, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side managed to reach the final of Europa League where they lost to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties. Meanwhile the Teady Bears managed to beat Hearts 2-0 in the Scottish Cup final and secure their only major title of last season. The Dutch manager is now preparing for his first full season in charge of the Gers and after a fruitful debut campaign, the expectations would be pretty high for the coming campaign. After the Sunderland game, Rangers will face Blackpool, West Ham United and Tottenham before their opening match of the Scottish League against Livingston.

Probable Lineups

Considering that this would be the team’s first match of the new campaign, both managers are likely to rotate the squad and give ample game-time to the players in order to get some match fitness. Meanwhile Sunderland’s new signings Daniel Ballard, Leon Dajaku would be itching to get on the field. Last season’s top scorer Ross Stewart is expected to lead the line. As for Rangers, new-comers Antonio Colak and Tom Lawrence could be given some game-time. The likes of Aribo, Morelos, Allan McGregor, Borna Barisic, Steven Davis and Ryan Kent, who were not involved in the friendly last weekend might feature in Saturday’s game.

Sunderland probable starting lineup: Patterson; Hume, Wright, Batth, cirkin; O’Neil, Evans; Roberts, Pritchard, Emberton; Stewart.

Rangers probable starting lineup: McLaughlin; Tavernier, Simpson, Goldson, King; Lundstram, Sands, Lowry; Arfield, Sakala, S. Wright.
