Sporting, who finished second in the Primeira Liga standings last term, haven’t made a great start to the 2022-23 season, recording just three wins from their opening seven league games thus far. In their last outing against Boavista, Marcus Edwards canceled out Bruno Lourenco’s opener. Sporting recorded close to 75% of ball possession, but struggled to create enough goal-scoring chances, and were made to pay for that, as Lourenco converted an 83rd-minute penalty to secure the win for the Panthers. It was the Green and Whites’ third league-defeat of the season.Â

Gil Vicente, on the other hand, played out a dramatic draw against Rio Ave at home. The visitors took the lead through Goncalo Rodrigues on the stroke of half-time, before Abdul-Aziz Yakubu doubled the lead in the 72st-minute. However, Fran Navarro pulled one back for Gil Vicente, ten minutes from time, before Murilo Costa netted a last-ditch equaliser in the 95th-minute to snatch a point. Gilistas have now failed to win any of their most recent four home games in all competitions, picking up two draws and two defeats. Ivo Viera’s men have won just one of their last eight games across all competitions.  Â
