Sporting Kansas City will host New York Red Bulls in a Major League Soccer (MLS) fixture at Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday. The hosts are heading into the tie on the back of a disappointing 3-0 loss at Seattle Sounders last Saturday, while NY Red Bulls edged past Atlanta United 2-1 on Thursday in their last outing. The victory helped NYRB to occupy second spot in the Eastern Conference table with 29 points, level with leaders Montreal, separated by only a number of wins. Meanwhile Sporting KC are languishing at the 13th spot in the 14-team Western conference table with just 16 points from 18 games.

At Lume Field, last Saturday, Sporting KC conceded three goals through Will Bruin, Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan. It was the Wizards’ 10th defeat of the season with more than half of the 2022 campaign already in the books, the Wizards are still trying to find their winning form in order to move up in the table. Peter Vermes’ side are seven points adrift of the playoff and with nine of their upcoming league fixtures to be held at home, they can still hope for a resurgence. Meanwhile for that to happen, Vermes will need to tighten up his team’s defence, which has already conceded 32 goals, second most in the league so far.
NY Red Bulls, on the other hand, have been in pretty good form, winning five of their last seven games across all competitions. Their latest victory came up against Atlanta United when Lewis Morgan canceled out Jose Martinez’s opener before Serge Ngoma netted a last-ditch winner. All three goals were scored in the last 15 minutes of the game. Prior to that, Gerhard Struber’s side lost 2-0 to leaders Los Angeles FC. This team likes to sit back and hit the opposition on the counter’s and they have done that to good effect so far.
Sporting KC’s all-time top scorer Daniel Salloi is expected to lead their attack once again, with Shelton and Russell in support. Remi Walter continues to be the workhorse in the midfield with Duke and Hernandez doing a slightly advanced role. Meanwhile Alan Pulido and Gadi Kinda are sidelined with injuries. As for NY Red Bulls, Omir Fernandez, who has provided six assists this campaign, would be the key player in the team. Klimala would be the target-man up front with Yearwood, Fernandez and Morgan playing behind the striker.
Sporting KC probable line-up: Melia; Sweat, Fontas, Isimat-Mirin, Zusi; Walter, Duke, Hernandez; Salloi, Shelton, Russell
NY Red Bulls probable line-up: Coronel; Edwards, S. Nealis, Long, Tolkin; Amaya, Casseres; Yearwood, Fernandez, Morgan; Klimala
The Major League Soccer encounter between Sporting KC and NY Red Bulls will take place at Children’s Mercy Park and it will kickoff at 5:30 am IST on July 4, Monday.
