Two former champions Spain and Germany will play each other in a Group E fixture of the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the Al Bayt stadium on Sunday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of contrasting results in their opening matches on Wednesday, with La Roja demolishing Costa Rica 7-0, while Germany suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat against Japan. Die Mannschaft are desperate for a win Sunday’s encounter in order to keep their destiny in their own hands, while three points against the four-time world champions might be enough for Luis Enrique’s side to secure a place in the Round of 16 stage.

La Roja began their World cup campaign with a seven-star victory against Costa Rica. Enrique’s side netted seven times without reply to secure all three points. Ferran Torres scored a brace, while the likes of Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio, Gavi, Alvaro Morata and Carlos Soler netted one goal each for Spain at al Thumama Stadium. The 2010 world champions recorded 81% ball possession, the most by any team since Opta first recorded statistics for the World Cup back in 1966. Enrique opted for a usual 4-3-3 formation with Asensio deployed as a false number 9, while Torres and Olmo occupied the flanks. Meanwhile, a statement victory over Germany could thrust La Roja back into the conversation of contenders to go all the way in this year’s tournament in Qatar.
Germany, on the other hand, lost the match against the Samurai Blue after taking the lead through Ilkay Gundogan.Hansi Flick’s side dominated proceedings in the opening half, but the Asian outfit came out all guns blazing in the second half and netted twice through Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano to secure the win. The 2014 world champions often found themselves on the losing side of the fifty-fifty battles and struggled to cope with Japan’s collective and intense pressing. The Die Mannschaft desperately needs all three points against La Roja and head coach Flick has admitted that his side are “under pressure” heading into Sunday’s game.
