Manchester United ended the recent summer transfer window in an explosive fashion. They made quite a few deadline day moves. One of the standout signings from that lot is midfielder Sofyan Amrabat. The Morocco international completed his loan move from Fiorentina. It was one of the most-anticipated signings of the summer for the club supporters. He was linked with the Red Devils for a considerable amount of time and finally on the last day of the window, United sealed the deal.

What makes this move special is that Manchester United very much require a player in the holding midfield position. They only have Casemiro currently for that role hence Sofyan Amrabat’s arrival will provide more depth in that position. Besides, the 27-year-old also shares a good bond with the manager Erik ten Hag. He came through the Utrecht Academy and became a regular under ten Hag when the Dutchman took charge of the club.

Sofyan Amrabat on Erik ten Hag

The midfielder feels ten Hag played a key role in his development as a footballer at the start of his career. “It was very important because I was very young. I was 18, 19 years old and he gave me the chance to play in the first team with Utrecht. We had a fantastic time, a really good season. I learned a lot from him. So maybe he’s one of the most important people in my career for now,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s website.

Amrabat also feels that he shares a similar trait as ten Hag in their eagerness to keep winning. “It’s fantastic because I think Erik ten Hag is a coach who will push always to the limit. He’s hungry. He wants to win. He’s a winner and I like that. I think I’m also similar, I’m also a winner. I want to win every day so it’s a good match,” he explained.

The Morocco international, however, refused to talk about his playing style as he wants to do the talking on the pitch rather than off it. “I don’t like to speak about myself. I want to show it on the pitch, but I can promise that I will give my best with everything; every day, every minute, every second. So, it is the only thing that I can say now,” he stated.

Sofyan Amrabat creates history

It is also important to note that Sofyan Amrabat will now become the first-ever player from Morocco to represent Manchester United. He spoke about how the supporters in his home country would respond to the transfer. “I’m very proud. I think already a lot of Moroccans have followed already United, but now [there will be] a lot of extra million fans from Morocco. And they are so, so proud. I hope that I can make the fans for United and also them very, very happy and proud,” he elaborated.

Amrabat also spoke about how he looks up to some of the former club greats. “I think United had so many fantastic players and young midfielders. So, in general, I look more to the midfielders like Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, David Beckham. But there were so many big players. Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Louis Saha, Wayne Rooney, [Cristiano] Ronaldo. I can go on for one hour to say names. Of course, [my brother and I] spoke about it. He told me that he thinks that I have to go to the Premier League, it is the strongest league in the world. So now I’m here, I can’t wait,” he added.
